The evolution of Pediatric dentistry has been shaped heavily over the years. And it’s been a long road. In fact, there was a period in dental history where it wasn’t even officially recognized! City Dental Kids & Braces takes a look over the history of pediatric dentistry from its inception to where it stands today to give you a better idea of the importance behind it and why seeing a pediatric dentist is beneficial for your children over seeing a regular dentist.

Evolution of Pediatric Dentistry – A Timeline

Here is a timeline reviewing the evolution of pediatric dentistry and some of the more important achievements in dentistry over the past century:

  • 1914: Known as the father of dental hygiene, Alfred C. Fones creates a program for public schools so that dental graduates can provide care.
  • 1924: The first book written in English on pediatric dentistry is published.
  • 1938: Animal bristles, used in the first tooth brushes, replaced with nylon bristles thanks to the invention of this year.
  • 1940’s: Pediatric dentistry officially recognized as a specialty by the American Dental Association.
  • 1947: Founding of The American Academy of Pedodontics(aka the American Academy of Pediatrics).
  • 1950’s: Statistics show about half of school-age children beginning to visit the dentist on a yearly basis.
  • 1960’s: The Pediatric Dentistry Training Program helps increase the number of dentists who are trained to treat pediatric populations and children with special needs.
  • 1971-1975: The first National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey used to diagnose the nutritional well-being and health of American children and adults.
  • 1985-1989: 9-year olds with cavities drops to 34%.
  • 1990’s: Tooth decay in children increases, and is particularly noticeable in preschool kids.
  • 2000’s: The concept of establishing comprehensive oral healthcare before the age of one, or “Dental Home”, endorsed by the American Dental Association.
  • 2014: The State of Little Teeth report examines the epidemic of tooth decay in young children in the United States.

A lot has happened in a century’s time in pediatric and general dentistry. What else should you consider in terms of why choosing a knowledgeable, pediatric dentist is a good choice for your kids?

Pediatric Dentists Need More Experience

In addition to 4 years in dental school, pediatric dentists have to undergo an additional 2 years of residency training in dentistry for infants, children, teens, and children with special needs.

Oftentimes, a dentist comfortable in taking care of both a child’s teeth and adult’s teeth is more knowledgeable and comfortable with their skills in a range of different patients.

Pediatric Dentists Are More Comfortable With Kids

It’s true… some dentists that are not specialty pediatric dentists will still on occasion take children as patients. They may still have the experience to be able to do the job.

The difference is a pediatric dentist knows how to make a child feel comfortable during their dental visit. This can mean a world of difference to the child. Instead of kicking and screaming during their visit, they may be smiling and laughing.

Why should a dental visit be a traumatizing experience for your child? Choose a dentist that specializes in care for children specifically!

Beyond all these reasons, a children’s dentist understands the history of pediatric dentistry and the huge responsibility on their shoulders when it comes to establishing good dental habits in your kids. When it comes to their care, choose a professional!
